Physical Intervention Training | Restrictive Interventions

This training provides learners, working in higher risk environments, with additional skills and knowledge to restrict and control the movement of an individual when necessary, to protect them from harm and to stop them harming others. 

The primary goal is to reduce the need for physical intervention - not only to ensure such interventions are safer.

What type of skills can this level of physical intervention training include?

First, learners must complete training in how to prevent and defuse conflict and deal with challenging behaviour, without the need to use force, plus our Assault Avoidance and Disengagement programme.

Training will then include an appropriate level of restrictive skills based upon the risks and need together with an understanding of relevant law, ethics and medical risks. 

  • Most programmes involve low level restrictive standing and seated holds
  • Advanced training is provided for those who may have to respond to higher levels of violence for example, in an emergency
  • Additional specialist skills are taught for certain roles. These can include searching, incident response, crowd scenarios and use of equipment.
