SABP and UK Pods Finalists at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards

It was an honour to join the Surrey & Borders Partnership Foundation NHS Trust (SABP) and UK PODS teams last night as finalists in the Best Partnership Solution Improving Patient Safety category at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards.

The results at the SABP Deacon Unit speak for themselves, including eliminating ground restraint through a considered, well-managed introduction of the Safety PodTM and a terrific staff team.

Deacon is an inpatient assessment and treatment service for adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues where for 12 months no ground restraints have been used since the introduction of the Safety PodTM with Maybo's accompanying training. Further, there has been a significant drop in the use of (any) restraint and a reduction in the duration of restraints.

The Safety PodTM is not just a groundbreaking alternative to high-risk restraints, it is also having unplanned benefits including the positive sensory experience which one man on the autistic spectrum finds comforting. He now uses the Safety PodTM (which is part of the furniture) to self calm in situations that previously led to staff intervention and often escalation.

Well done Surrey & Borders and UK PODS!

Congratulations also to Danny Angus and his Mersey Care colleague’s, winners of the Changing Culture Award for their ‘No Force First’ initiative.
