'Inappropriate Restraint': Teacher Faces Professional Misconduct Allegations

Primary school teacher Philip Meredith denied a total of eight allegations when he appeared before a General Teaching Council for Wales hearing.

Soon after his appointment in September 2011 into a role which involved teaching some of the more demanding pupils at the 430-pupil school, Meredith started to cause concern for Head teacher Alison Darcey.

She explained that some of the pupils “had very challenging behaviour” and often displayed “unruly and violent behaviour” and reported that Meredith frequently failed to write up restraint forms after incidents.

A teaching assistant told the professional conduct committee hearing of an incident in which a child was lodged under a bean bag for up to five minutes while Meredith sat on top of him.
