Call for Legislation to Protect Health Workers from Violent Attacks

Whilst it is an offence to assault emergency staff, there is curretly no similar legislation in place to protect other health workers.

Following revelations in The Daily Record of the levels of verbal abuse and physical assaults on hospital staff working for NHS Lanarkshire, MSP,Margaret McCulloch, has called for a law to protect those working on the frontline.

Under it's zero tolerance policy, NHS Lanarkshire does not accept violence or assaults against members of it's staff from anyone who is fullly aware of their actions and the overall number of incidents is showing a downward trend.

A spokesperson for the hospital said, “We encourage staff to record all incidents and have robust procedures in place to ensure that support is provided to our staff."
